WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

I have been asked why I am so involved in The Daughters of the Nile.  My immediate thought is Why Not?  Actually, my first thought is that that person doesn’t know enough about what DoN does or it would be a no-brainer.

The Mission of Nydia Temple No. 4, Daughters of the Nile, is to support the great work of the Shriners Healthcare System and Shriners International. That is our only philanthropic project.  It is an honor for me to say that I help support “the kids.”  How can we not help support the medical care and attention for those children accessing a state-of-the-art medical system?  We have the best of the best caring for those beautiful children.

We can proudly say that the Daughters of the Nile are the greatest supporters of Shriners Healthcare and Hospitals, second only to the Shriners themselves.  We do that in many ways: financially, physically, and emotionally.  We give of our pocketbooks.  We volunteer at and for the Shriners Hospital itself. We help to spread the word.

This has been an unusual year due to “Miss Covid,” but we have continued to do what we can to assist and to remind the staff that we are ready to return at their beckoning.

My year as Queen is winding down.  We have surrounded ourselves with the “Angels Among Us.”  Personally, I am craving hugs.  I want to be able to see people’s mouths when they speak.  I just want to see people!  I want to see my friends.  The nurse in me says that this too will pass.  My impatient inner self says it isn’t happening soon enough.

My scripture this year has been “He will order his Angels to protect you wherever you go.” Psalm 91.11.  Little did I know that when I chose this bible verse just how appropriate it would be.  I ask that you love one another and that you keep yourself safe.  We will meet again soon.

Did You Know October 2020

2020-11-30T14:07:27-08:00

Did You Know
1. Did you know that Nydia Temple has a mission statement? Yes, it was written by the Membership and Strategic Planning Committee a couple of years ago. If you would like to read it, simply turn to the back page of the Nydian newsletter – it is included in each edition.

2. Did you know that the Daughters of the Nile Foundation can receive matching gifts from employers? Yes, many companies offer matching gift programs as a way to encourage employees to contribute to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. Most of these programs match contributions dollar for dollar, and some may even contribute more. Some companies will make charitable contributions to organizations you support with your volunteer time. This is a great way to double, or sometimes even triple, the impact of your giving.

3. Due to the COVID pandemic, the Shriners Children’s Hospital – Portland has implemented telehealth home visits. This allows the physicians and outpatient clinic staff to monitor patients from the safety of their homes. This program is called Fast Track Virtual Visits, using video software to provide a convenient alternative for families who may be travelling long distances or unable to visit the hospital due to COVID-19.

About Us

2020-11-22T16:28:42-08:00

Daughters of the Nile is an international fraternal organization for women 18 years of age or older. They are related by birth or marriage to a Shriner, Master Mason, or a Daughter of the Nile. They may also be a majority member in good standing of a Masonic-related organization for girls, or a former patient at a Shriners Hospitals for Children® (with or without a Masonic relationship). Founded in Seattle, Washington in 1913, Daughters of the Nile members total over 19,000 in 132 cities throughout the United States, Canada, and South America. Our members are proud of their long association with Shriners International and their continuing support of Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

The Daughters of the Nile maintain two permanent funds to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children®. The Daughters of the Nile Foundation (a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit charity) administers funds in the United States. In Canada, the funds are administered by the Daughters of the Nile Canadian Trust.

Our one and only charitable endeavor is Shriners Hospitals for Children® and their network of 22 hospitals throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They are renowned for providing the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries, cleft lip and palate, and many other special healthcare needs within a compassionate, family centered, and collaborative care environment. Shriners Hospitals for Children® also provide for the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals and cutting-edge research into new treatments and procedures to improve the lives of children and their families.

WHAT WE DO

The Daughters of the Nile contribute monetary donations of over $2 million annually to Shriners Hospitals for Children® through our Foundation and Trust. Since 1924, we have contributed over $66 million, second only to the Shriners themselves.

Each year our members give generously of their time and talents by providing more than 180,000 hours of volunteer time at the hospitals. In addition, they sew clothing, quilts and special projects requested by the hospitals, provide books, toys, games, and other educational/recreational materials, and sponsor parties for patients and their families each month. The annual value of these hours and donated items is in excess of another $1 million annually.

History

2020-11-30T14:08:21-08:00

Nydia Temple was chartered April 24, 1919 in Portland, Oregon. 1919 was remarkable, in that so much happened in such a relatively short period of time. Times were tough, the country was just recovering from a Great World War, transportation was in its infancy, yet these early ladies were very successful in establishing a strong organization built on charity while maintaining unquestionable ethics and character.

Membership increased rapidly the first year and a half ending 1920 with 1036 members, which established Nydia Temple as the largest individual temple in the Daughters of the Nile system; proudly we still hold that position today.

The early records show Nydia Temple’s philanthropy was directed toward the families of members in need. We also had parties to benefit the elderly and during WWII the members formed a Red Cross Surgical Dressing group to prepare bandages. At the same time serving at the George A. White Service Men’s Center; funds were provided for a Blood Mobile Unit and we furnished a room at Barnes Hospital for servicemen.

Today our philanthropic efforts are directed solely to raising funds for the Daughters of the Nile Convalescent Endowment Fund (CEF) and the Convalescent Relief Account (CRA). Early on Nydia Temple dedicated itself to assisting with the work of the Shriners Hospitals. In 1925 our records indicate that Nydia Temple was the first temple to contribute “Sewing” items to any Shriners Hospital. Currently the members of Nydia Temple have a strong volunteer presence at the Shriners Children’s Hospital – Portland.

Throughout the years the members established many first and brought several honors to Nydia Temple.  This could only be accomplished through their love and dedication. This temple has a very proud heritage that we honor and cherish. The members continue to uphold their proud charitable work dedicated to assisting the Shriners in supporting “Shriners Children’s Hospitals”.

Shriners Children’s the new brand

2020-11-30T14:08:40-08:00

The fun-loving Shriners Fraternity has been around for 150 years, and the hard-working Shriners Hospitals for Children have been around for 100 of those years. Oregonians are very proud that the idea of creating the hospital system was born at an Imperial Session held in Portland in 1920, and we are also fortunate to have a hospital located in Portland.

The Daughters of the Nile organization has one charitable mission – the Shriners Hospitals for Children. For those 100 years, we have worked hard for, and alongside our Shriners, to provide amazing care to over 1.4 million children so far.

Today, the world is a different place and the Shriners Hospitals have been, and will continue to change along with it. Not all facilities are hospitals. Not all programs are in hospitals. More children are being seen in an “outpatient” or “out of facility” setting, and frankly the name no longer fits the mission. In addition, many states are not allowing the use of the name Shriners Hospitals for Children to describe any facility that is not a hospital.

From Imperial Potentate Jeffrey Sowder: We have become far more than a collection, or even a system, of hospitals. We have become leaders in care, research and medical education. We give our patients and families so much more than medical care. We provide as many resources as we have available – from custom prosthetics to adaptive sports opportunities, to assistive devices that encourage personal independence. We help them build confidence and self-esteem.

The new name, the new brand, for the hospital system is simply Shriners Children’s tm.

Possibilities:
Shriners Children’s Hospital – Portland
Shriners Children’s Medical Center – Pasadena
Shriners Children’s Genomic Research Institute

This branding change creates consistency and unity for all locations and for all means of providing care, with the continued desire to serve more children and families than ever before. Watch the video below, which was distributed by the Marketing Department of Shriners International.
